The most critical question for all the special needs parent is “Who will take care of our child after us?”
We do have choices; for some its the siblings, for some its the friends and family… But its studied and we as parents know that, no-one is going to be as caring, as focussed and as devoted to their needs, other than the Parents.
Hence, as it is evidenced from established models in USA and UK, Parents run Assisted Living facilities, are the most fulfilling and safe options for the people with neuro-developmental challenges. These parent run facilities, need to have the capability, experience and the strength in their overall program, which will enable the life of the special needs child.
The vulnerability of the special needs parent, can be addressed with proper planning and access to the right information. In order to stave any uncertainty in the life of the special child, the planning for their future, needs to begin early. The right institution which is empathetic to the cause of the child should be the target. Perhaps engaging with an expert to understand the life journey of my child, would enable one to avoid any surprises.
We recommend that you can connect with us (Contact details mentioned at the top and bottom) for availing the advisory services for the planning the future of your child. This service is free, as it is from our Parent Led organisation, as a service to the society.
Akshadhaa Assisted Living is the answer to the critical question which every parent of a child with special needs has…What is the one single thought which keeps them awake at night ?
Nine out of ten would answer,The well being of their child after they are gone. It’s also perhaps the most difficult question to answer, especially to the concerned parent.
Akshadhaa Foundation is a parent driven initiative and has been working in the field of deploying innovative methodologies to enable the lives of children and young adults with Autism and other neuro-developmental challenges, since 2012. The organisational vision statement right at the time of inception had these inclusions; “Enhancing Abilities-Enabling Life, to provide a life of dignified contentment for the people with special needs”.
A person with special needs, requires training and learning support, all thru their lives. The innovative curriculum design, education content was to transform and steer the child towards a set of gainful vocational modules which will enable their future. Akshadhaa Foundation, has initiated Akshadhaa Assisted Living Project, as the next in line effort to bring the education, training, vocation life skills coupled with independent living, thereby ensuring a life of dignified contentment. Akshadhaa Assisted Living Project emanates from the decade long experience of Akshadhaa Foundation, background work done by the trustees in getting hands on experience with the assisted living matured models in USA and UK and the encouragement received from the parents to commence this critical initiative.
Akshadhaa Assisted Living Project (AALP), is designed to deliver the above and even more. It will be a unique parent-led initiative, which will fulfil this critical need for a safe and inclusive community. The Parents of the Special needs individuals would play the lead in the conceptualisation, execution and finally enabling the day- to-day running of the project. Internationally also Parents are at the forefront of the initiatives involving the neuro-developmentally challenged special needs individuals, majorly from the safety/security perspective. The inability of the concerned special needs person, to effectively comprehend and communicate, practically needs the vital involvement of the parents who are the biggest stakeholder in the well-being of the SNI. In USA, we have witnessed several access areas where professionals can access in the presence of parents, considering the sensitivity of this challenged population.
AALP is at the core a parent driven project. The core team of the parents, for the execution of AALP has been constituted and is fully on the ground and are working on the inception steps of garnering the seed capital, land acquisition, and financial closure. The next steps of Project Announcement and securing the participation from the parents from across the world would be actionised once the initial steps have been set in full motion.
At the nucleus, AALP envisages to develop into a vibrant community providing a life of dignified contentment to the people with special needs. For the parents it gives the opportunity to participate or sit back and relax to see their child lead an independent life. The facilities are meticulously aimed to provide a healthy, happy and fulfilled life for all the residents.
The project envisages residential quarters for the special needs individuals with the parents quarters in the same campus but in a separate sections. Apart from these residential facilities, There will be provision for a Resource center, Hospital, staff quarters, canteens, auditoriums, guest house, vocational training centre and a lot of free open spaces. The project with aim for the highest Green Rating, in an effort to ensure sustainability and environment friendliness. The project aims to adopt smart environment management policies to ensure the rhythm with the overall harmony of the AALP community.
We will keep mentioning our original promise of enabling a ‘Life of Dignified Contentment for the people with Special Needs’. All the individual specific, customised efforts in the residential area, resource center related activities, medical intervention, wellness program, sports, free time management and entertainment; will be institutionalised drawing from the vast operational experience we have from the functioning of Akshadhaa Foundation in the last decade. As a parent you will be having the satisfaction of observing this beautiful transition of your child to an independent adult in his or her own world of friends, well-wishers, caregivers and the entire AALP community.
